Shōnen and like genres such as Seinen are anime/manga aimed at male audiences of various age groups in Japan. Anime that are mostly action packed typically go here. Examples are: Naruto, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul, One Punch Man and more!

Shōjo and like genres such as Josei are anime/manga aimed at female audiences of various age groups in Japan. Anime that are typically girl power and romance based are likely to be in this genre. Examples are: Sailor Moon, My Love Story!!, Kimi ni Todoke, Usagi Drop and more!
